Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) is an angular, durable blasting abrasive that can be recycled many times. It is the most commonly used abrasive grain in sand blast finishing and surface preparation because of its cost advantage, longevity, hardness, and its ability to cut through hard metals such as sintered carbide.
White, virgin aluminum oxide media is available in coarse through fine grit products on several different backings and in various formats. It is a great choice for wood because it offers a cooler sanding experience and does not damage the surface of your workpiece like a harder, more aggressive, coarser material might. It also works very well on stainless steel and other metals when used in a coarser grit range and a hard surface/pressure.
Brown Fused, or Stelux, aluminum oxide is an angular, durable blasting media that can be recycled many times. It is a great choice for rust removal, cleaning and surface preparation on a variety of materials such as wood, metals, plastics, and ceramics. It is particularly well suited for use on stainless steel because it creates a passivation layer of aluminium oxide (4 nm thick) over the exposed metal, which protects it from further corrosion.
Aluminum oxide is a naturally occurring mineral. It has a Mohs hardness rating of 9, just below diamond. It is an important ingredient in most types of sandpaper. As a powder, it is a major component, along with silica, of the cue tip “chalk” used in billiards.
